Valen is a rapidly growing predictive analytics company that provides pricing optimization models to our clients in the property and casualty insurance market.  The company is a venture capital backed, growth-stage company and already has three of the top ten insurance carriers in the United States as clients.

Reporting to the CEO, this hands-on position will manage the accounting, finance and HR functions of the company. The CFO must be proactive and operations-oriented; helping to drive the growth of the business and always asking the tough questions.

Technical/Functional Expectations:

 

  • Financial Strategies and Plans: Develops optimum financing strategies in order to ensure Valen has appropriate capital available to meet its objectives. Negotiates and executes favorable debt and equity financings with venture capital, private equity and venture debt providers.  Keeps the company transaction ready at all times.
  • Financial Management, Budgeting and Forecasting: Uses business growth plans, sales forecast, pipeline metrics, cash projections and capital expenditure requirements to establish detailed financial forecasts, budgets and capital needs.  Drives the continual review of financial forecasts and capital needs in order to make recommendations to the leadership team and the Board of Directors.  Hold the entire leadership team accountable for meeting strategic objectives, business plan execution and budget prudence.  Develops the annual budget revenue, cost of sales and capital expenses, from budget requirements provided by department mangers. Develops the format and process to be used by all managers with fiscal responsibility for all budgeting and forecasting activities. Applies financial procedures and processes in order to facilitate the organization's ability to meet its objectives.
  • Cash Flow: Continuously monitors company cash flow and directs action to preserve and/or maximize cash from all sources. Invests company short- and long-term cash in such a way as to maximize yields while conservatively preserving principal and maintaining availability.
  • Contract Management:  Negotiates and manages all contracting processes with all Valen stakeholders including customers, investors, partners and vendors.
  • Legal Management: Selects and manages corporate legal counsel.  Ensures that Valen’s legal advice is unsurpassed in all areas of corporate counsel including customer contracts, vendor contracts, intellectual property and debt and equity financings.
  • Capitalization Tables and Stock Option Management: Keeps Valen’s capitalization table current and accurate and transaction ready at all times.  Manages all aspects of Valen’s stock option plan including 409A valuations, stock option distribution planning and stock option plan management and accounting.
  • Outside Financial Relationships: Establishes and maintains strong banking and insurance relationships in an effort to provide the company with the most effective and least costly services.
  • Manage Accounting Functions: Ensures that all accounting functions for the company are maintained on a current basis, in accordance with GAAP, and existing state and federal tax laws. Oversees the updating of accounting procedures as required in order to remain in compliance with tax laws.
  • Tax Filings: Ensures that all federal, state, and local requirements are met, in order to protect the organization's interests and comply with timely tax filings.
  • Audit: Coordinates and approves external audits, including implementation of recommendations made by auditors in order to ensure compliance with financial and accounting requirements.
  • Performance Goals - Individual/Team/Unit: Uses objective tools, information, and feedback in order to establish performance goals for individual/team/unit.
  • Staff Leadership: Plans performance expectations, monitor, and appraise the associate's job results and performance in order to develop, counsel, or discipline staff members.
  • Shareholder and Bank Communication: Communicates financial information as required by preferred stock and loan covenants.
  • Other duties as required: Performs other tasks in order to contribute to the team effort.

 

 Business Experience:

  • Early Stage: Closed a venture capital round of financing of at least $5 million in the past 5 years and managed the complete financial operations of a company that has grown significantly in a short period of time.
  • Chief Financial Officer: Previous CFO or VP of Finance experience with technology venture capital backed companies is required. Developed and managed a complex financial model used both for potential investors as well as day-to-day operational decision making.  Have a deep understanding of GAAP revenue recognition rules for SaaS companies
  • Licenses, Registrations and Credentials: CPA designation desirable.

                                                                

Educational Requirements:

  • BA/BS - Finance or Accounting
  • MBA preferred
